What to expect

Dates for the winter semester of 2024/25

The lectures for all first semester students start on September 23, 2024, before that you will have the opportunity to get to know the HSHL, the cities of Hamm and Lippstadt as well as your new fellow students during the orientation phase from September 2 during (voluntary) preliminary courses with joint math courses, tours and many other activities. The preliminary courses take place in person and you can join at any time. Please note that the perliminary courses are taught in German.

There is a special program for all new international students in English offered by the International Office starting from September 16th, 2024 onwards.

You should also note that the important introductions offered by the Center for Knowledge Management and the Central Student Counseling take place during the orientation phase. The Center for Knowledge Management will give you an introduction to the myHSHL portal, the learning platform, StudyAssist, how to use the libraries and lots of other important information about your everyday life as a student.

The most important dates for first semester students at a glance

  • From September 2nd 2024 onwards | Orientation phase

    Your studies mark the beginning of a new phase in your life - everything is new, different from what you may have known at school and you probably have a lot of questions. To make it easier for you to start your studies, the university regularly offers an orientation phase from the beginning of September, during which you can get to know important contact persons, your future fellow students, the campus and student life.

    Preliminary courses
    From September 2, two weeks of voluntary, free preliminary courses will be held at both campuses as part of the orientation phase for first semester students, giving you the opportunity to refresh your A-level knowledge in mathematics, chemistry and physics, ask initial questions and get to know your future fellow students. The courses are taught in German. You can join the preliminary courses at any time.

  • September 18th 2024 | Welcome event for first semester students

    On September 18, starting at 11:00 a.m., the central first semester welcome for all first-year Bachelor's and Master's students will take place in the WESTPRESS arena in Hamm.
    Please note that the event is primarily held in German.
    After the welcome event, you will have the opportunity to talk to all the important contact points at the university, ask questions and refresh yourself with a drink at the backstage fair.

  • September 19th 2024 | Student welcome and safety briefings

    Hamm
    All degree programs welcome their new Bachelor's and Master's students at 01:00 p.m. on the Hamm campus.
    After the welcoming speeches by the course directors, IT briefings and campus tours will take place.

    Lippstadt
    The course welcomes will also take place in person at the Lippstadt campus.
    Important safety briefings will also take place on the day. The exact dates and rooms will be announced here in advance.

    Following the welcome events and safety briefings, the AStA (General Students Committee) invites you to a get-together on both campuses and a subsequent pub crawl, where you can get to know your new fellow students and Hamm and Lippstadt.

  • September 23rd 2024 | Start of lecture period

    Lectures for first-semester students in the Bachelor's degree programs start on 23 September 2024.

  • September 26th 2024 | First semester café

    On September 26th the Central Student Counseling invites you to the first semester café on both campuses from 10:00 a.m. to 02:00 p.m.. At the first semester café, you can have a coffee and ask any questions you may have about starting your studies in a relaxed, informal atmosphere.
    In addition to the Central Student Counseling, the University Sports Department, the Career Service, the International Office and other important contact points will also be present.

One click and you're in!

Your HSHL account will be created upon enrollment. You will receive your login data with an initial password by e-mail to your private e-mail address. With this, you have:

  • your own e-mail account (firstname.lastname@stud.hshl.de)
  • access to the pool computers (user name = e-mail address)
  • access to myHSHL (user name = e-mail address)
  • access to all of the university's media services

When you first log in, you will be asked to change your initial password. The new password must consist of at least 8 characters, contain upper and lower-case letters and a special character or number. Furthermore, you may not use your name in the password.

myHSHL and Study Platform

  • myHSHL

    The "myHSHL" portal is the digital heart of the university. Students can use a wide range of media services via this online platform. From lecture notes to test results: Here you will find current information and study materials for each of your courses. You can access these documents over the entire course of your studies - the study platform is your digital memory, so to speak. Beyond that you can exchange information with your fellow students and teachers, register in groups or for excursions and much more.

  • Download the curriculum

    You can download your curriculum from the study platform. You will be automatically activated on the study platform for your degree program.

    If you have any questions or technical problems, please write an e-mail to: elearning@hshl.de or call the hotline: +49 (0) 2381 8789-199. The hotline is available Monday to Thursday from 9:00 to 17:00 and Friday from 9:00 to 14:00. Don't forget to state your name and your degree program.

  • Registration for tutorial groups

    The curriculum is structured in such a way that there is also a tutorial/seminar for each course of lectures. You have to register for these tutorials/seminars and sign up in groups.

  • Campus Office Online

    To enable the Campus Office to contact you by e-mail, it is necessary that you click once on "Campus Office" in myHSHL.

    The link will take you to the Campus Office online portal. This activation is necessary, for example, to receive information about the registration for exams by e-mail.
